Is it really possible to do that? Yes it is, provided you think along the right lines. Lots of people assume that to add value to their home they need to add big things such as an extension. The bathroom or the kitchen needs to be ripped out and replaced, or something similar.

But this level of activity isn’t necessary. Instead there are plenty of other improvements you can make that don’t require anywhere near as much money. The upside of this is that you can spend less and still make it easier to sell your home, if that should be your goal.

Here are half a dozen ideas for spending as little as possible while still making a big improvement:

1. Give your house a spring clean. Don’t underestimate the effect this can have. A well kept home always commands a better value than one that is scruffy and untidy. Show people how good your home can look, and make sure it smells, feels and looks fantastic.
2. Take a closer look at your carpets. Replacing them costs money, but cleaning them is a lot cheaper. Carpet shampoo and a proper carpet cleaner can work wonders. Alternatively call the experts in for a deeper clean than you could perform yourself. If the carpets are quite new simply use a carpet deodoriser and give them a good vacuum.
3. Don’t forget the outside of your home. The garden says a lot about who lives inside the house, and anyone coming to view a house for sale will see the garden long before they set foot inside. Simple things such as mowing the lawn and making sure the flowerbeds are tidy can make all the difference. If you need a bit more, buy some cheap bedding plants or perhaps some hanging baskets to put outside the front door.
4. Think about redecorating your existing rooms rather than adding new ones on. Neutral colours sell more houses than you might think! Repainting the woodwork and stripping patterned wallpaper to replace with plain painted walls can make a big difference. Consider which rooms need this treatment the most, and tackle those most in need first.
5. Buy some new accessories to change the whole look of a room. Curtains and cushions can make a big difference in the living room, which should always be free of clutter of course – as should every other room in the house.
6. Think about re-staining any wooden furniture that isn’t looking its best any more. It can add a new look and be nice for you to use as well as looking great for whoever comes to view your home.

So you can tell that there is a lot you can do for little money to make big changes to your home. Concentrate on one thing at a time and you will soon see the difference overall.
