Both Williams' sisters continue to stun the tennis world by their constant amazing performances in singles and doubles tournaments as they keep escalating in the world rankings. Venus and Serena have won several WTA titles as well as Grand Slams in Australia, Wimbledon and the United States. More recently at the Olympic Games in Beijing China both were amongst the best seeded female players, Venus managing to go all the way to the quarterfinals the same as her sister Serena who is only one year younger.
These two female players have dominated the WTA circuit over the past years and they have even become fashion icons in the sport. Both Serena and Venus have also faced some problems with injuries that, at different periods, have left them out of competitions.
The youngest Williams, Serena, who back in July 2002 was ranked number one in the world, has won a total of thirty one career titles of which eight are Grand Slams and currently holds a record of 388-82. She also has two Olympic gold medals to her name in the doubles category in Sidney 2000 and Beijing 2008. Venus ranked number one in the early months of 2005 and has a total of nine grand slams and 37 career titles. Additionally, she won the singles and doubles gold medal in Sidney and her latest one in Beijing along side with her sister in doubles.
During 2008 Venus has been quite more active than Serena since she was recovering from a thumb injury. Just last month Venus took the All England Club - Wimbledon Grand Slam in her hands. She basically overcame the best players in the world to defend her title. Since the early days of their career back in 1997 both sisters have excelled anyone's expectations and their names keep being in the sports news highlights.
Now that we entered the third and final quarter of the year, these two exceptional players face a new challenge and that is the US Open in New York City which will start next week. Serena, who is currently in the third position in the rankings, closely follows the two Serbian players Jankovic and Ivanovic who are first and second places respectively and Venus remains in eighth place. Serena and Venus are very aware that their rivals are very strong and they will do anything possible to keep ascending.
Another important thing is the age factor which could eventually be a problem for the Americans girls as more of the other players' ages are between twenty to twenty three years old while they are in their late twenties already.
Nevertheless, there is nothing written yet and we know these sisters can and will surprise us again as they have repeatedly done in the past. It will be very interesting to see a possible match between the two of them again; it could be an unforgettable clash. So let's get set for what this year's US Open could bring us and let's hope the best for the Williams sisters who are remarkable athletes.
