How To Repair Patio Furniture

Many hotels, condominiums, resorts and country clubs already know the secret to long-lasting, comfortable patio furniture; invest in top quality furniture and spend the time and money necessary to keep it looking like new year after year. This is especially true for patio chairs.  Rather than replacing sturdy, well constructed chairs and chaise lounges, property managers opt to resling or restrap pool furniture to get more from their initial capital investments.

This is not the case for cheaper, plastic patio furniture, which is much more difficult to repair because the plastic breaks down as well as the straps or slings.  In this case it is best to replace the entire set with better, sturdier patio furniture.

Even high-end wrought iron and aluminum  patio furniture needs repair after a few years.  Painted finishes and straps can fade and discolor due to exposure from sun, pool chemicals, acid rain, heat, and tree sap.  The frames may still be in great shape though, and if this is the case, it might be difficult and very costly to find the same quality brand new.

The best idea is to follow the lead of property managers and find a company that is expert in refurbishing chairs and chaise lounges. There are three options for upgrading outdoor patio and pool furniture.  Chairs and chaise lounges can be powdercoated and restrapped, restrapped only, or replaced with new.

Expert craftsmen can restrap each piece of furniture using high quality vinyl available many different colors. These straps contain mildew inhibitors and ultraviolet stabilizers to help maintain color brightness. The vinyl is then heated to extreme temperatures to make it pliable, then installed.  Other styles incorporate interwoven lacing which is performed in a “hot room”.  This area is heated to 100 degrees at all times to ensure proper tension and support.  The metal frames are sandblasted down to the original base. If the frame is aluminum, special aluminum oxide grit is used to avoid pitting the metal.

Then, using powder-coating technology, the paint is applied to the frame.  The frame is then baked in an oven to cure the powder so that the finish is hard enough to withstand blows from a hammer.  With this type of refinishing, your patio furniture will last for generations.
