Real Madrid won the right to continue dreaming on the Spanish league title by crushing Athletic Bilbao 5-1 last Saturday. The victory in the Santiago Bernabeu allowed the Whites to add 95 points, one less than Barcelona, who won 3-2 at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium against Sevilla. With only one game left in the competition, the Merengues not only need to win the next game but need Barcelona to fail its game too. That would be the only way for the Whites to win the title that currently belongs to the Barça.

Despite the 5-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao, the Meregues suffered during the game. This was a triumph that caused panic, suspense and stress, but the Merengues were able to have a positive result in the final minutes as they were able to crush their rival after been tied for a big part the game. If Barcelona had lost their match against Sevilla, Real Madrid's victory would have been more satisfying. However, Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-2 and now the Whites are waiting for a miracle this weekend.

The locals started attacking since the very beginning against a crouching Athletic, who was well aware of its rival's urgency to win but had nothing to lose. Athletic's Gaizka Toquero made the first goal attempt of the game at minute 16, but he lost his opportunity for his lack of quickness and decision as Ramos took the ball away from his feet. A key play for Real Madrid came four minutes later, when Fernando Amorebieta deflected the ball with his hand when protecting the area after a shot of Gonzalo Higuain. That cost Amorebieta a red card and gave Cristiano Ronaldo the chance to open the scoring with a penalty kick at minute 22.

After this goal, the Merengues kept their attacks. At minute 41, however, Athletic's captain Fran Yeste tied the scoring with a remarkable individual play after eluding four Whites players before beating Iker Casillas with a low and direct shot. With this Athletic goal, the first half came to an end.

In the second half, Kaká came in for Fernando Gago. From then, Kaká, Higuain, Ronaldo, Esteban Granero and Marcelo started to attack Gorka Iraizoz's goal, who became the Athletics' hero for a while as he stopped many of the shots. However, Iraizoz couldn't stop all of them. At minute 72nd, Higuain appeared at the far post and, with a short header, put the scoreboard 2-1. This way he started to restore the hope of the title for his team. Seven minutes later, Sergio Ramos won a lonely ride to make it 3-1 and a minute later Karim Benzema marked the 4-1 after a pass of Kaká.

It seemed that Benzema's would be the final goal of the game but Marcelo took advantage of a ball that fell on his feet and sealed the game with a 5-1 at minute 89.

With this victory, Real Madrid is still one point behind Barcelona in the standings, hoping for a miracle on the last game of the season and focusing on winning against Malaga. Next week, in the last date of La Liga, Barcelona will receive Valladolid and Real Madrid will play away at Malaga.
