NBA- Orlando Gets Revenge Beating Lakers 96-94

The Orlando Magic were able to avenge their loss in last year’s NBA finals this Sunday. The Magic defeated the Lakers 96-94 in a close match. Superstar Lakers guard Kobe Bryant had the chance to change the outcome but missed a critical three-pointer in the final seconds.

Vince Carter and Dwight Howard both gave strong contributions for their teams, scoring 25 and 15 points, respectively. The rest of the starters scored more than 10 points each.

This is the Lakers’ (46-18) third consecutive loss; it is the first time since January 2008 that LA has suffered through this kind of losing streak. The Magic (44-20), on the other hand, have added their fifth straight win and are in second place of the Eastern Conference.

In the initial quarter, both teams exchanged baskets in the first three minutes, tying the game three times. However, as the minutes passed, Orlando became more determined to take a strong lead, and with an 11-7 run, the team was up in the scoring 31-24.

In the second quarter, Marcin Gortat and Mickael Pietrus gave the Magic a good start, extending their lead to ten points, 38-38. Minutes later, the Lakers responded with an 8-2 run, bringing the score to 40-36 with 6:37 left. But Orlando reacted with some great shooting, moving to 46-38. At the end of the quarter, Derek Fisher added a three-pointer and Pau Gasol two baskets, and the Lakers ended the quarter just 4 points down, 52-48.

Coming in from halftime, the battle continued. The Lakers were trying to cut their disadvantage while the Magic fought to increase their lead. Baskets came in a flurry and Orlando was able to amplify its advantage to 12 points with 47.5 seconds left in the third. However, Howard committed a foul against Gasol with 27.8 seconds left. The Spaniard scored the two free throws and closed the quarter with LA down by 10 points, 74-64.

During the last quarter, the Lakers were determined to cut the disadvantage; in fact, they began with a 10-3 run. They managed to bring the distance to 3 points. A duel began between Carter and Howard, producing for the Magic on the one hand, and Bryant and Gasol for the Lakers on the other. The score was staggeringly close in the final seconds; Bryant had added a three-pointer and a jump shot to put the Lakers behind by just 1 point with 12.9 seconds left on the clock.

But Brown, in the heat of the moment, made a mistake: a foul with 9.7 seconds left, giving Carter a chance to score on two free throws. Carter missed the first but made the second. The Lakers still had a chance to tie or win the game.

In the final play, however, Bryant missed the shot. The game ended 96-94 in favor of the Magic.

After the game, Kobe insisted that his team had played better against Orlando than it had in the two previous games. Despite being down in the game, the Lakers gave a strong fight to the end.

“The last two games (in Miami and Charlotte) we did not play with the sense of urgency to compete. Tonight we did. We played really, really hard; we just missed some things defensively. But all in all, our defense was able to keep us in the game," said Bryant.

The best scorers for Orlando were Vince Carter with 25 points and 3 rebounds; Dwight Howard with 15 points and 16 rebounds; Jameer Nelson with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists; Rashard Lewis with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; and finally Matt Barnes with 10 points and 6 rebounds. For the L.A Lakers the best scorers were Kobe Bryant with 34 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists; Pau Gasol with 20 points and 11 rebounds; and ultimately Derek Fisher with 11 points.

Royal Poinciana Chapel parishioners Bob and Cathy Ostellino of Wellington enjoy a refreshment on the veranda after today's service. The chapel celebrated the town's Centennial with period garb, music and a history lesson.

This morning, the Rev. Robert Norris took the opportunity to paint a picture
for his Royal Poinciana Chapel congregation of what the world was like in
1911. That image included an American population that numbered 94 million, ball gown
the introduction of the escalator and the first plane flying over Palm Beach
County.

It was also an opportunity to highlight the influence of Henry Morrison
Flagler. Norris recited Flagler’s words that “Sunday was to be kept in Palm
Beach!” And to that end, Flagler would close the golf course on Sundays,
Norris told those who turned out for the chapel’s celebration of the

With the men wearing top hats and tails and the women wearing dresses and
brightly colored hats, the chorale had come dressed in period style for the
service, which included music that was in keeping with the time. It included
a piece written by Amy Albee Newcome in the early 1900s specifically for the
chapel.

According to Ceci Dadisman, a member of the chorale from West Palm Beach, &#8220 long evening dresses long evening dresses; We
sing music from this period anyway. This music is not foreign to us.”
However, the Newcome work was “something we were unfamiliar with and had
never sung before. We received it this morning and sang it today.”

Dressed to the nines

Several members of the congregation had dressed for the occasion, including
Suzanne Turner of West Palm Beach wedding party dresses , who had arrived in a long black dress
with a bright red hat and carrying a black lace parasol and fan, formal gowns along with
a beaded handbag. The hat included feathers and a long train that flowed
down the back. “I loved that period, prom from 1860 to 1910. This is the ‘Gone
With the Wind’ era. This chapel has considerable history with Mr. Flagler.”

Carroll Peacock, a parishioner from West Palm Beach, was also among those
dressed for the occasion strapless prom dress , sporting a coat and bowtie with tails. “It’s a
period piece,” he said. “People give me a little jab when I wear it. It fits
the occasion. This happens only once every 100 years, so why not?”

Free pulpit

The chapel was founded in 1884 and built in 1898 on land donated by Flagler.
The chapel became independent in 1900. Flagler sought to support a site of
worship on the island that was nondenominational, had the freest pulpit in
America, the finest preaching, the best music and no debt.

As Norris told the congregation, “Henry Morrison Flagler&#8217 prom dresses ;s great and most
lasting legacy is not The Breakers. It is not Whitehall. It is not the Royal
Poinciana Hotel, which no longer exists except in the history books.
Flagler’s greatest gift is this humble, graduation dresses graduation dresses subtle and simple chapel that has
been the spiritual filling station for generations of worshipers.”
