FC Barcelona demonstrated again why it is the best team in the world. After the twenty-first round of the Spanish League, the Culés continue to be the leaders of the league, maintaining their winning streak after a 2-1 victory against Getafe.
Barça ‘s victory at Camp Nou was its seventeenth of the season.
Despite the players’ high level of competition, it wasn’t easy for the host team to defeat Getafe. The match was very even from the beginning; both teams dominated the ball in similar ways.
The Azulgranas began the game with a disadvantage, missing defender Dani Alves, who was out due to injury. To compensate for Alves’ absence, Barça had to change its strategy. The players shifted their movements and directed their game towards the center of the field, achieving a much greater control.
Another key factor in Barça’s victory was the performance of Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernández, and Lionel Messi. Josep Guardiola, FC Barcelona’s coach, made a very good decision by placing the weight of the game on these outstanding players.
After seven minutes, Messi brought the first goal. With all the style of a soccer star, the Argentine striker intercepted the ball, advanced quickly, and, with an incredibly accurate shot, sent the ball flying to the bottom right of Jordi Codina’s net.
The goal pushed Barcelona into control of the game – at least, for a while. In minute 25, the situation changed for the Spanish leaders. Defender Gerard Piqué was ejected from the game, and Barça had to change its game plan and adjust to only ten players.
Getafe took advantage of the circumstances to complicate things for its opponents. The Azulones arranged to face the Catalans with quick plays while a solid defense strove to apply pressure.
For several minutes, Barcelona suffered under the attacks of its rivals and their dangerous plays – Getafe even moved to score. Victor Valdez, however, Barça’s goalkeeper, did an excellent job of defending his goal.
To regain control, Barcelona sought the support of its strikers, Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, hoping to stop Getafe’s sudden advance. But a failed shot from Xavi Hernandez and a deflected ball from Ibrahimovic were the only actions that closed a tight first half.
Getafe began the second half very close to opening its own scoring. It was striker Roberto Soldado who was responsible for shaking Valdes’ goal posts. After the scare, Guardiola replaced Ibrahimovic with striker Sergio Busquets.
With Busquets on the pitch, Barcelona started to balance its game. Xavi and Iniesta were able to develop themselves better in their areas, giving greater freedom for Messi to advance. Barça returned to its initial strategy, playing offensively to make Getafe feel the pressure.
Both teams failed in their attempts to score for much of the second half. It wasn’t until minute 67 when Barcelona added to its lead, with Messi crossing the visitors’ defense and sending the ball to Xavi, who scored to set the game at 2-0.
At this point in the game, Getafe must have felt that it was nigh impossible to reach Barcelona. But in the closing minutes of the match, the team had a chance to score, thanks to a penalty action from Rafael Marquez against Kepa Blanco. Roberto Soldado converted the penalty kick and scored the 2-1 that ended the game.
With this victory Barcelona (55) increased its lead and kept a distance of 5 points from Real Madrid, which is in second place with 50 points.
