Golf - Slocum Wins the Barclays at Liberty National

It seems that this weekend was the best of his life for Heath Slocum, who was the surprise winner of The Barclays in New York at the Liberty National. Slocum passed Tiger Woods with one shot over and bought himself the victory that moved him from an obscure no. 124 in the FedEx standings to no. 3. He is also guaranteed placement in the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedEx Cup.

Slocum, who is still in shock after the victory, said that he was both happy and surprised at the events of the weekend. He came to the event with nothing to lose; it was perhaps this knowledge that allowed him to concentrate while in the presence of so many top players. In fact, he demonstrated that he could be better than the great Tiger Woods on a difficult course.

Woods was only one shot behind before he made it to the last hole. There, he shot a clutch 6-iron from 189 yards away, closing the ball to within 7 feet. But he missed the final putt, ending with 67 shots that left him waiting to see if there was going to be a playoff.

"We misread it by almost a cup," Woods said of the final putt. "That's frustrating when you misread a putt that bad….It happens. Not too many golf courses that you misread putts that badly. This golf course is one of them."

Although Slocum and Steve Stricker were initially tied at first place, Stricker missed a final 10-foot putt that would have forced the playoff. Slocum raised his hands in the air, relishing his victory.

Ernie Els (66) and Padraig Harrington (67) were close behind the leaders.

Slocum, who entered The Barclays as barely a blip on the world rankings at no. 197, finished at 9-under 275 and earned $1.35 million for his third career PGA Tour victory, his first in four years. His other victories, moreover, occurred with lackluster competition, as the world’s best were competing elsewhere.

Once at Liberty National, however, Slocum did not let celebrity intimate him.

"You look at the names and the credentials they brought, all the tournament wins, all the majors, yeah, it seems like a daunting task," Slocum agreed. "Maybe thank God I was so focused that I didn't have to pay attention to that. ...Otherwise, yeah, it might have been a different story. But I think that's why we all practice and stay in our routines is maybe so we don't have to think about stuff like that."

Tiger Woods, the tournament favorites, had a very difficult weekend at Liberty National, however, where the greens were his great enemies. He surprised the audience and fans after failing at so many putts, and was frustrated at his inability to perform at the level of his expectations. As a result, he is once again a runner up. Of the last four tournaments he has played since missing the cut in the British Open, Woods has been runner up in two of them. He also lost two important tournaments, the most significant of which was the PGA Championship against Ye Yang.
