It was an exciting weekend when the 2009-2010 season of the English Premier League began. The Toffees made repeated attempts to score but went without success. The team was unable to fully enter the game. Then the Toffeemen suffered yet another indignity; Fabregas converted a pass from Manuel Alumnia in minute 70 into his team’s fifth goal of the match.
Fabregas made his two goals in tribute to his friend and compatriot Dani Jarque, a Spanish player who died last week.
At this point in the game it was impossible for Everton to reach Arsenal in the scoreboard, but the home team was not willing to allow itself to be trumped without retaliation. The Everton players strained to break the barriers their rivals put in place, hoping to score at least one point.
The situation was extraordinarily difficult for the locals, who saw their goal in danger again after a powerful shot from Andrey Arshavin placed the ball at Eduardo da Silva’s feet.
At minute 90, however, Everton was able to score their consolation goal, but were unable to do anything else to prevent a humiliating defeat.
This amazing victory for Arsenal temporarily placed the London team at the top of the general standings of the English Premier League.
Aware that they must not lower their guard after the triumph, the Arsenal players plan on staying focused and continuing to add points. With more victories like this one under the team’s belt, the Gunners may be able to consider getting the title.
