Tennis- Rafael Nadal is Back and Preparing for the US Open

After months of rest, Rafael Nadal has returned to the majors. The former world number 1 was sidelined for some two months due to knee injuries. Knee pain had lost him the French Open, where he was defending champion; it later kept him out of the Wimbledon.

Now, he has returned for the Rogers Cup that was held last week in Canada and for the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters that began on Monday. He has entered both events as preparation for the US Open in late August; he is also tentatively checking the condition of his knees, although according to doctors, his recovery should be near complete.

Last year, the Spaniard faced a very different picture; last season he won two of the most prestigious Grand Slams – Roland Garros and Wimbledon – and made it to the semifinals of the other two majors of the year, the Australian Open and the US Open. The latter was won by current world number 1 Roger Federer. Nadal’s wins had launched him to the top of men’s singles tennis rankings, a veritable throne as he approached 2009. He dove into the new year with a win at the Australian Open, but his knee injury prevented him from defending his title at Roland Garros, where he was defeated by Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Later on, he didn’t defend his Wimbledon title either since he had to withdraw due to his injury.

Nadal’s absence gave Federer, the longtime Swiss champion, the opportunity to become No. 1 again; Federer won the Roland Garros title then took the Wimbledon title after an epic battle with Andy Roddick, demonstrating his incredible skill as one of the best male tennis players in history. He is now pursuing the US Open title, hoping to maintain his grip in the tennis rankings.

Now it is a waiting game, to see whether Nadal’s comeback will challenge Federer’s status. Nadal himself seems unconcerned with his slip in the rankings.

“It’s only a number, just a number change,” Nadal said. “For me, the ranking doesn’t change a lot my perspective and my goals. I’m just as happy as I was three days ago when I was No. 2, and [as I was] before when I was No. 1. In the end, what makes me happy is be ready to play and enjoying playing tennis. If it’s like this, if I can compete with normal conditions, I am very happy to be here.”

Nadal entered the Rogers Cup knowing that a hard surface court did not best complement his style; he also acknowledged that it would be almost impossible to win the tournament, but viewed the Cup as an opportunity to gauge his recovery and prepare for the upcoming US Open.

The Spaniard must begin again his ascent to the top. His fall in the rankings has also left him facing a fall in grace. Some complain that Nadal only reached No. 1 last year, after 5 years at No. 2, because of Federer’s bout of mononucleosis. And Federer is back showing his skill in the sport. Nadal’s new challenge is to prove that he is still one of the best – if not the best – players in the world.
