After winning two of the last three games, the San Antonio Silver Stars beat the Minnesota Lynx this past Sunday 89-87. With this victory, the Silver Stars are a half game closer to the Lynx, who are in the third place of the Western Conference. In fact, San Antonio has won two of the last three matches against Minnesota, which presently has a record of 11-11; the Silver Stars, on the other hand, have a record of 10-11 and are hoping for another triumph against the Phoenix Mercury on August 13th to move to third place.

In most of the first quarter, both teams managed to take even control of the action. By the end of that quarter, however, the Lynx had a great performance by Nicky Anosike, who scored 12 points in the first period, making a 6-2 run that gave the Lynx a one point lead and left the score at 19-20.

In the second quarter, San Antonio managed to tie the score on two occasions, as did the Lynx. However an 8-2 point run of the Silver Stars at the end of the quarter gave them a 5 point lead and a final score at halftime of 41-36.

The Lynx entered the third trying to cut the lead; however, San Antonio had a great run by making 3 three-pointers in a 12-0 run, extending the lead to 17-points with 2:15. The third quarter ended with a score of 69-60 in favor of the Silver Stars. Becky Hammon scored 12 points for San Antonio in the quarter, whereas Anosike made 7 points in the third for Minnesota.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Lynx managed to cut the lead and, in the last moments of the quarter, tied the game at 87 after Anosike hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left. However, in the final possession, Becky Hammon drew the defense and assisted the ball to Ann Wauters, who then made the shot at the buzzer. That incredible shot, so close to the free throw line, gave the victory to San Antonio 89-87.

During the final quarter, the Lynx outscored the Silver Stars 27-20. Candice Wiggins had a great quarter, scoring 11 points of the team’s 27 points in the period.

At the end of the game the Minnesota coach Jennifer Gillom gave credit to the good shooting by San Antonio, especially regarding the three-point line percentage and also the execution of the final shot by Ann Wauters.

“Most teams shoot well in the first half and don't shoot well in the second half, but it was like nonstop with them. To shoot 40 percent from three is pretty awesome. (Wauters) is a big presence inside. She disrupted a lot of our shots which normally we would make. Wauters was a huge addition for them, but I still think we can beat them,” said Coach Gillom.

The best scorers for the San Antonio Silver Stars were Becky Hammon with 22 points, 9 assists and 2 rebounds; Edwige Lawson-Wade with 15 points and 5 rebounds; Sophia Young with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists; and ultimately Ann Wauters with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. For the Minnesota Lynx the best scorers were Nicky Anosike with 24 points and 5 rebounds; Candice Wiggins with 14 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds; Renee Montgomery with 14 points and 4 rebounds; and finally Charde Houston with 11 points and 3 rebounds.
