WNBA- Connecticut Sun Ends Losing Streak by Crushing Detroit Shock
After a three-game losing streak, the Connecticut Sun finally enjoyed a resounding victory on Sunday, beating the Detroit Shock 83-65. Despite losing against Chicago on Saturday, Connecticut came prepared to triumph against Detroit no matter what. Lindsay Whalen and Asjha Jones gave stellar performances, scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively. The victory left the Sun tied with the Mystics for second place in the Eastern Conference.
The Shock had entered the game with confidence, especially after their 91-83 victory over Minnesota on July 31st, but the Sun quickly deflated that balloon.
In most of the first quarter, both teams managed to take even control of the action. By the end of that quarter, however, the Sun made an 11-6 run that gave them a nine point lead, leaving the score at 29-20.
In the second quarter, Detroit managed to tie the score, but Whalen made an 11 point run at the end of the quarter, extending the Sun’s lead by 17 points and ending with 50-33 at halftime.
The Shock entered the third trying to cut the lead; however, Detroit couldn’t handle either Whalen’s great shots or Jones’ extraordinary contribution from the field – the player scored 8 points in a row. The third ended with a score of 71-52, Connecticut.
The fourth quarter proved much the same. Every time Detroit tried to cut the lead, the Sun would respond with a small run and increase their lead. Then, in the fourth, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota shot a three-pointer that ended the Shock’s chances to close the score. The shot not only gave Connecticut a 20 point lead, but also gave the team the motivation to preserve the lead, despite the efforts by the Shock players.
The game ended 83-65 in favor of the Sun. The team now has a 10-9 overall record in the Eastern Conference.
At the end of the game, coach Mike Thibault expressed his happiness with the victory and his satisfaction with the Sun’s performance – particularly Whalen and Jones, who both made incredible shots from the field.
"That's a really a big win. We had a 4:30 wake-up call this morning. It says something to come out the way we did. We talked about the start of the third quarter. We were up 17, and we got it to 20 or 21 right away. We said we can't be happy the way it is. Start the third quarter like it was 0-0," Thibault stated.
The best scorers for the Connecticut Sun were Whalen with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists; Jones with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Sandrine Gruda with 11 points and 8 rebounds; and finally Anete Jekabsone-Zogota with 9 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. For the Detroit Shock the best contributors were Deanna Nolan with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists; Cheryl Ford with 9 points and 9 rebounds; and ultimately Taj McWilliams with 8 points and 6 rebounds.
