Writing is one of the most essential skills we must learn in today's society. It is important to success in school. It is important to success in the work force. Writing is important to participate in the new global economy. Not only is writing important for communicating with others, it is also an important part of learning and problem solving. While most people fully recognize just how important writing is, many still do not fully understand how to develop this important life skill. There are four important rules to remember when working to develop your writing skills.
Writing cannot be learned in a short time. You can take a writing class that can help you improve your skill but drastic improvements to your writing skill is really the task of a lifetime. Writing is complex and challenging and takes time to learn then even more time to fully develop your potential as a writer.
Writing cannot be learned from a book or a lecture. A good writing teacher is more of a coach than a lecturer because truly the only way to improve your writing is through practice. Writing is a skill that requires you to develop your muscle memory just as other arts, such as music and dance, as well as sports. You must continually practice a dance step or football play before it becomes second nature. The same principle holds true of writing.
Writing is a process. Writing must proceed through a series of steps: invention, drafting, revising and editing. While the process is universal, each individual writer has a unique process that can be adapted to changing writing tasks. The writing process is recursive and writers may find themselves moving back and forth between steps on some writing projects.
Writing is socially situated. Unless writing strictly for yourself, it is important to spend time contemplating the social situation of your writing task. Who is your audience? What type of language use does that audience expect? Should the writing be formal or casual? What knowledge can you expect the audience to possess and what knowledge does the audience expect of you as the writer?
Anyone can be a writer. Writing well is not a gift from the gods or an inherited trait. It is a skill that can be learned and refined through practice. It takes time and effort to learn to write well, just as anything worth doing does, but the rewards for your effort can be infinite.

When Allison Skinner and David Young went out to California for
a reality TV show, they only expected to be there for a couple
weeks.
The show, the CW Network’s “ flower girls dresses Shedding for the Wedding,” had a
weight-loss theme and contestants competed in fitness and
weight-related challenges to win a dream wedding. Being the
smallest pair there, and considering that Young had already lost
100 pounds on his own, Young said he didn’t expect the two of them
to last very long.
“We kept telling people, ‘Don’t worry. They’re saying we’re
going to be there a couple months, but we’ll be back in a couple of
weeks,’” Young said.
They ended up staying a lot longer than that. The Auburn couple,
who have not yet set a date for their wedding, ended up finishing
in third place out of nine, and they received a lot of screen time
while appearing on all eight episodes. During the show, they also
won a wedding cake in one of the challenges.
“I never knew how competitive I was until they threw me in that
mix,” Skinner said. “I would get so mad when I would lose. I would
look around and I would think, ‘We can’t lose to these people. I
know we can beat them.’” Wedding Ceremony Wedding Ceremony
Since leaving the show, the two have continued eating
nutritiously and exercising regularly. Skinner is training with a
Skaneateles fitness club for the Iron Girl triathlon in Syracuse on
Aug. 7, and she and Young want to use their Facebook page
(TeamFairyTale1) to give health tips and advice.
The two sat down with The Citizen last week and discussed the
experience of watching themselves on television and how the show
changed their day-to-day lives. Here are some excerpts from that
interview:
Q: What was it like to watch yourselves on television?
Young: They have so much footage, they can pretty much portray
you any way they want. I’m not the most physical person or the most
manly man, but they made me look like a complete wimp, like I was
running around with my tail between my legs and getting screamed at
by Allison all the time. I definitely have a backbone, and they
really didn’t show it at all.
Skinner: Yeah, and I’m a really strong personality, and I think
that some of the other personalities on the show weren’t what they
needed it to be. They’d ask me questions, and I was honest about it
and it just felt like everything I said was aired. We were watching
the same time America was watching, and I was going “ cheap party dresses cheap party dresses;Oh my God. I
said that, and they aired that.” ... But you know, with that said,
there were some really empowering moments, like watching yourself
exercise in a way you never would have thought you could. And
actually seeing your body transform week by week. That was pretty
amazing.
Q: When you watched, did you watch with friends and family, and
did you get any feedback?
Skinner: dresses on line People know me and they know my personality. Probably
half of what we said was sarcastic. We were trying to be funny. But
in the beginning, we would just watch the two of us together. We
really didn’t want to watch it with anyone else. We did the finale
and the premiere with people at Curley’s, but the rest of it was
just at home. Our moms came once or twice. There were some
arguments between us afterwards. He was saying, “Look, America can
see how mean you are.” But I was like, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it
like that.” And I would apologize. I got embarrassed. That’s not
how I am. ... In the blogs and the message boards were pretty
brutal to me.
Q: You followed them?
Skinner: I didn’t because I didn’t want to read it. But he liked
to read them.
Young: It never hurt my feelings.
Skinner: Because no one said anything about you. They were all
talking about me. But I guess when you put yourself on a platform
like that, you have to kind of have to expect it.
Young: But they picked her out because she was the personality
on the show.
Q: What has changed for you, day to day, since the show?
Young: I’m always conscious about what goes into my mouth. ...
I know what it’s like to be 350 pounds, and I never want to come
close to that, so as long as I stay within my range, I’m happy. But
everything that goes into my mouth, it’s like, should I be eating
this? I allow one day a week to not concentrate as much on it. But
the rest of the time, I’m very diligent about making healthy
choices.
Skinner: Before I would eat everything on my plate. Now Blue Dresses Blue Dresses, I think
if I’m actually full, it’s OK if I put my plate away. Our reading
material has changed. Now we have men’ floor-length bridesmaid dresses floor-length bridesmaid dressess health, and women’s health
magazines around the house. Fitness magazines. A lot of our hobbies
have changed.
Young: Instead of going out to dinner, we go shopping. That’s
our treat. Instead of dinner, it’s we’re going to go out and get a
new outfit now.
Q: Do you think you would have made those changes without the
show?
Young: I think I learned how to become more of an athlete than I
was before; I just did like 20 minutes on a treadmill and I didn’t
really push myself. But the experience taught me that 20 minutes on
the treadmill isn’t good enough. You need 30 minutes, and then once
30 minutes gets comfortable, you need to keep upping it.
Skinner: I played sports in high school, and stuff like that.
I’d work out at the gym occasionally, but now I know I have to
bring myself to that place to where I’m getting really
uncomfortable — where you don’t want to work anymore, and then do
another 20 minutes after that. Running on a treadmill, walking on a
treadmill and reading a magazine is not working out. You might as
well just sit on the couch and watch some TV. I don’t think I
would’ve ever been able to get to where I am or continue what I’m
doing if it wasn’t for the show, because I didn’t know what I was
capable of doing.
Young: I remember before going, thinking back to “The Biggest
Loser” and thinking I can do that. But you never can brace yourself
for an experience like that until you’re there doing it.
Q: What advice do you have for people who are looking to make
these kinds of changes, but don’t have the opportunity that you did
to go on a multi-week television show?
Skinner: No. 1 would be to write everything you eat down. That
makes you accountable for what you’re eating. Once you figure out
you’ cheap party dresses ;re eating 4,000 calories a day when you’re only supposed to be
eating 1,500 ... nutrition is 70 percent of the battle. If you can
conquer that, then it’s just getting fit. It’s saying I’m going to
do that 5K in six weeks and I’m going to start out small, even if
you have to walk. I think that you need to join a gym, start out
running intervals. A minute on and a minute off, and then work your
way up. If you want to burn fat, you have to get your heart rate
up. ... And there’s no quick fix. Believe me, ball gown I tried it all. I’ve
done everything, and this is the only time in my life when I’ve got
close to my goal weight and kept it off. I recommend joining a team
or a running club, where people make you accountable to show
up.
Young: My whole thing is a cheat day a week. I think it’s
important to give yourself a treat. But my biggest recommendation
is not to put it off. Don’t say you’re going to start next Monday.
I used to do that when I was huge. Then there was one day when I
was just like, look at me. Tomorrow morning it’s on. That’s when
everything started. I got on my bike and I went a mile. Then that
mile turned into two miles, wedding gowns then four miles. Before I knew it ball gowns dresses , I
was up to 12 miles a day on my bike. Start small, even if it’s
getting on the treadmill for five or 10 minutes, whatever you can
do.
