Getting Started with Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking has become a popular pastime for many who wish to preserve their memories in a creative way. For those who are just beginning the hobby, there are so many scrapbooking supplies, classes and instructional books available that getting started may seem overwhelming.

It doesn't need to be overwhelming, however. By following a few simple guidelines, it is easy to purchase the right supplies, create memorable pages and finish a scrapbook that preserves memories for generations.

Choosing Scrapbooking Supplies

The choices in scrapbooking supplies seem endless, but just a few basic supplies are needed to begin an album. Most of the following items will be needed to begin a scrapbook:

The photos and memorabilia to be put in the scrapbook;

An album - preferably one that is archival quality (archival quality means that it is acid free so that the items in the album do not become damaged over time;

Page protectors for the album pages;

Acid free decorative papers that will complement your photos and memorabilia;

Photo safe pens - at least one black one and any other colors that may be used;

A paper cutter - there are several good small table-top paper cutters that are available just for scrapbooking;

Scissors

These are the basic items that are needed to begin an album. There are entire stores and online sites dedicated to only selling scrapbooking supplies, and all of these supplies (except for the photos and memorabilia) can be found at any one of them.

Creating Memorable Scrapbook Pages

The purpose of a scrapbook is to preserve memories and tell a story. The most memorable pages do this by presenting the photos and memorabilia in an attractive way while adding a lot of writing, know as journalling, to tell the story.

Some scrapbookers choose to create elaborate scrapbook pages that are works of art. They take hours to create one page and the pages certainly are memorable. However, this method does not work well for many scrapbookers because it is very time consuming.

The best way to create memorable pages is to keep it simple:

Choose a theme for the scrapbook and continue it through the entire album. It could be a chronological album of yearly events, a baby album, a wedding album, an album of all Christmas pictures, etc...;

Choose a few colors of papers and pens that complement each other, and stick with them throughout the album;

Use decorative stickers and other embellishments lightly;

Journal liberally. This is probably the best way to make a scrapbook memorable. Tell the stories behind the photos. In years to come, those who look at the album will be much more impressed with the stories that they read than the elaborateness of the designs of the pages.

Preserve the Scrapbooks Correctly

Even creating a simple scrapbook takes a lot of time, and it is important to preserve the memories and the work properly. It's easy to do this:

All materials used for the scrapbook should be of archival quality and photo safe. This includes the album, its pages and page protectors, papers and stickers used for decorative touches and the ink used to journal;

Use page protectors. They will protect pages from unwanted damage;

When the albums are finished store them upright in a temperature controlled room. Do not store them in basements or attics where heat, humidity or extreme cold could damage them.

By following these guidelines, it is easy to start creating scrapbooks that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

School Punishes Teen Boy for Creative prom prom Proposal

Kids today. They just can't win. We tell them to get creative, do more, think more. But when a boy cuts out 12-inch-high letters from cardboard to craft a creative prom invite for a girl he likes, then tapes them to the wall near the entrance to his high school, long dresses he's "rewarded" by school administrators with a punishment. No prom for James Tate white dresses , say the higher-ups at the Connecticut school where Tate planned to escort Sonali Rodrigues to the big dance. Although the letters created no lasting damage to the school (he used tape to hang the letters), white cocktail dresses he's being disciplined for trespassing on school property as he was on the campus early to hang the removable sign. Way to encourage our kids!

Taking the prom away from kids is a pretty typical response in American high schools, and it's one that's always driven me bonkers because it is just SO widespread. Perhaps I'm overreaching, but prom is considered a preeeeeeetty big deal in the average American high school, where it happens just once a year plus size wedding gowns plus size wedding gowns, and depending on school rules, kids generally have only one or two chances to actually attend (in my day only the juniors had their own prom, so it was a one-shot deal for your own prom, although you could attend other classes' proms during your high school career).

It's the sort of thing that, taken away from a kid, they likely can't experience again. And although I won't give it as much life-changing credit as the teen magazines that blow it up as the most mystical moment of your life, I'll admit it was pretty darn big. I remember in detail much of both proms I attended years ago. It was only last year that I finally trashed the candle in a glass from my junior prom -- somehow realizing the layer of dust built into the wax would probably light on fire was the straw that broke this packrat's back.

With all that said, punishing kids like James Tate by taking away the prom seems to be its own form of cruel and unusual punishment . It's ripping one of the stepping stones of childhood out from under them. And for what? A not terribly serious infraction.

What troubles me in particular with the "can't go to prom" stories I've heard over the years is how often a kid was punished just for being a kid. Take the girl who had her dress handmade by her aunt, whose boyfriend had purchased the tickets, who was all set to have her last chance to go with someone to the prom, only to be told that she couldn't go because her grades were too low. I'm not going to beat around the bush here -- some kids just never make good grades. To punish them for that by taking away something fun, something that makes them more like OTHER KIDS does little to encourage them to get their grades up. It makes them feel that much more alone, that much more frustrated.

And so it is with kids who have been pushed to think outside of the box, short black dresses short black dresses only to be punished for doing it. James Tate could have been like any teenage boy. But he did something sweet and a little crazy. He didn't think it through, perhaps, but what did he really do wrong? He showed up at school EARLY? Ooooh, horrible.

Do you think James Tate should be allowed to go to prom? You can join a Facebook page to help get him there. What about other kids? Should prom be a punishment? wedding gowns
