NASCAR - Juan Pablo Montoya ganó la Copa Sprint en Watkins Glen
Juan Pablo Montoya se coronó campeón el pasado fin de semana de la Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen, vigésimo segundo evento de la actual temporada de la Copa Sprint de Nascar.
Este es el segundo triunfo de Montoya en su carrera como piloto profesional de la Copa Sprint, el primer triunfo lo obtuvo en el 2007, en la Toyota/Save Mart 350.
Luego de 113 carreras sin poder subirse a lo más alto de un podio, Montoya logra de manera sobresaliente un merecido triunfo que ha buscado a lo largo de toda la actual temporada.
Para Juan Pablo Montoya esta ha sido una temporada complicada. El colombiano ha estado muy cerca de ganar muchas competencias y otras se le han escapado por diferentes circunstancias. Montoya es consciente de que para poder ganar tiene que superar los malos momentos que ha vivido y dejar de lado la frustración que esto le ha provocado.
Montoya también reconoce que todavía le faltan muchas cosas por aprender. Para el piloto del equipo Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, uno de los factores más importantes para poder avanzar en su carrera, es concentrarse un poco más para evitar cometer tantos errores que lo llevan a la derrota.
Luego de tanto tiempo, la frustración de no obtener un triunfo ha afectado gravemente a Montoya. Esto, junto con las malas estrategias que el director del equipo, Brian Pattie, ha utilizado, provocó que el colombiano perdiera la oportunidad de coronarse vencedor en las dos competencias anteriores.
Montoya y Pattie han reconocido que entre ellos hay una fuerte diferencia de opiniones. Chip Ganassi, propietario del equipo, ha intervenido para que estos dos puedan tener una buena comunicación, por el bien del piloto así como de todo el equipo.
En Watkins Glen, Montoya partió de tercero en la parrilla de salida. El piloto del Chevrolet Impala #42 se mantuvo concentrado conduciendo su auto con autoridad y talento.
Montoya hizo un excelente trabajo desde el momento cuando se dio la señal de partida. Se mantuvo muy cerca de Carl Edwards (poleman) y Jamie McMurray, que eran los que lideraban el desafío.
Rápidamente Montoya superó a Edwards y a McMurray y se colocó de primero. La destreza con la que Montoya conducía parecía imposible de superar. Por más que lo intentaron, sus más cercanos perseguidores no lo pudieron rebasar.
El buen desempeño del piloto colombiano le permitió mantenerse al frente de la competencia durante 74 de las 90 vueltas programadas. Vuelta tras vuelta, Montoya demostraba que estaba dispuesto a hacer todo lo posible para romper su mala racha.
La carrera se vio afectada por varias indicaciones de bandera amarilla y verde. Montoya superó hábilmente cada uno de los inconvenientes que se le presentaron en el camino sin perder su preciado puesto.
Durante un extenso período, Marcos Ambrose fue el gran rival de Montoya, quien resistió la presión sin permitir que lo rebasaran. Luego de un pase por la zona de pits bajo indicación de bandera verde, durante la vuelta 60, Montoya regresó a la pista de primero, seguido por Ambrose, que aunque se esforzó no fue capaz de superar al colombiano.
Luego de esto se dieron otras dos indicaciones de bandera amarilla, las cuales Montoya superó al reinicio sin ningún problema. Para la última etapa del recorrido, que fue de 16 vueltas ininterrumpidas, Montoya creó una amplia distancia de casi cinco segundos con respecto a sus perseguidores hasta cruzar de primero la línea de meta.
Kurt Busch ingresó de segundo a la meta tras superar a Ambrose en la recta final. Así estos dos corredores completaron el podio.
