The Kansas City Chiefs are atop of the AFC West after adding their ninth win of the season. The Chiefs claimed a 27-13 victory at St Louis Rams during the fifteenth week of the NFL.
The last significant accomplishment of Kansas City was in 2003, when the squad was crowned division champions. Kansas City finished in last in the division last season with a poor record of four wins and twelve losses. For the current season, the Chiefs came with a distinct perspective and are working in their way to get out of a four-year slump finishing last in the division.
Implementing a renewed strategy the team put on a great season to become the division leaders, holding a record better then that of the San Diego Chargers, the 2009 division champions.
The Chiefs started the season with three straight wins. The squad’s first win was a 21-14 stun of the San Diego Chargers. After their bye week, Kansas City suffered two defeats, first falling 19-9 to the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans 35-31. Kansas City tried to get back on the winning side and clinched another two victories, first a crushing 42-20 over Jacksonville and then a 13-10 OT win against Buffalo.
After carrying out a complicated game, the Oakland Raiders won in overtime with a tight score of 23-20. Denver was superior when playing at the Mile High Stadium and took the win 49-29. The Chiefs were not discouraged after those defeats and got three straight wins against Arizona, Seattle and Denver, respectively.
The fourteenth week was disastrous for Kansas City. San Diego showed no mercy to crush them 31-0. Although it was an embarrassing defeat, the Chiefs remained controlled and arrived at their next meeting in good shape. The squad defeated the St Louis Rams 27-13 and thus added its ninth win of the season.
The St Louis Rams have not had much significance in their respective division. Between 2002 and 2009 the team has been ranked in the lowest half of the NFC West between. His only recent winning season was in 2003 when they reached the division title.
Although the Rams are now first in their division, their participation this season has not been very prominent. The NFC West is a division with lesser visibility of the NFL, this is one factor that can be said has affected the performance of the Rams.
So far, the Rams have a record of six wins and eight victories in a season filled with ups and downs. That left St. Louis without the possibility of a place in the postseason.
The Rams opened with two field goals in the first quarter. The Chiefs rallied in the second quarter when they scored two touchdowns (14-6). In the third quarter, the Rams increased their 17-6 score thanks to an amazing 53-yard field goal by Ryan Succop. The Rams had the opportunity for a touchdown to make the score at 20-13 but the Chiefs responded and closed the game 27-13 with another touchdown.
The Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel had a brilliant comeback, after spending eleven days off because he underwent surgery to remove his appendix. Cassel completed 15 of 29 passes for one touchdown, 184 yards and one interception. Sam Bradford, the Rams’ quarterback launched and completed more passes (21/43) recorded 181 yards suffered an interception but was unable to complete a touchdown pass.
Kansas City will continue its quest for a playoff berth when they meet Tennessee on December 26. The squad will depend on what Seattle, its closest division rival and can do against Tampa Bay.
