In the semifinals of the National Football Conference the first game was between the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons, the latter was the leader of the NFC South with a 13-3 record with which they won the division and secured the home-field advantage.
For its part, the Packers finished in the second place of the NFC North and managed to advance to the playoffs as one of the NFC wildcards. Green Bay ended the regular season with a 10-6 record. Last year the Packers also finished in the second place with an 11-5 record, but failed to advance beyond the wildcard weekend.
Atlanta finished last season in the second place of its division with a 9-7 record. But this season the Falcons improved their results and even though they started the season with a defeat, they continued with four consecutive wins before his second defeat. After this they had a streak of 8 straight wins before their third and last loss of the regular season. Atlanta closed the season with a win that put them at the top of their division and gave them a spot in the playoffs.
During their visit to Atlanta, the Packers surpassed the locals exposing and exploiting all the weaknesses of the Hawks with a final score of 48-21 and clinched their pass to the NFC Conference Championship.
The NFC’s number one seed started the match imposing at home and making its first touchdown five minutes before the end of the first quarter. However in the second quarter the visitors managed to score early to tie the score. Atlanta came back to take the lead soon after, but Green Bay soon struck again to close the first half with 3 touchdowns and a 28-14 advantage. For the third quarter, the action was fully in charge of the Packers, who raised their score to 42-14 with two more touchdowns. Atlanta tried to recover in the last quarter but they were only able to make a touchdown. Meanwhile, Green Bay ended the match scoring two field goals.
The protagonists of the second match of NFC divisional playoffs were the Seattle Seahawks and the Chicago Bears.
The NFC West champion, Seattle, managed to advance to the playoffs with a record of 7-9. With this result the Seahawks were redeemed after their poor performance of last season when they finished in the third place with a 5-11 record. For their part, the Chicago Bears were crowned champions of the NFC North with eleven wins and five losses. Like Seattle, Chicago rallied from a third place and a 7-9 record in the 2009 season.
The Bears were locals in this match and they took the lead of every action in the field since the beginning. Chicago dominated at will the first part of the game; they scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and one in the second without letting their opponents to approach their end zone.
Seattle appeared on the scoreboard until the third quarter when they scored a field goal after a touchdown of the Bears that were ahead 28-3. In the final period, Chicago was neglected a bit and Seattle took advantage to score three touchdowns, although in a not very remarkable way, but the hosts scored again and raised its score to 35-24 to win the game.
Now that these two games have been settled, the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears will try to get a place in the Super Bowl XLV when both meet in the NFC Championship game that will be held on Sunday 23 January.
