The New York Giants secondary was quite a failure last season. Many would believe that the injuries suffered by Aaron Ross and Kenny Phillips happened because of the secondary not been able to cover correctly and lower their exposure. With a 8-8 record last season, the G-men are really going to have to step up this season if they want to get back on the winning train. The poor performance of the team snapped their good momentum in the playoffs. The Giants had made it to 4 consecutive playoffs, but that’s the end of it.
It has been a while since the Giants made it to the 2007 Super Bowl and put an end to the 18-0 record of the New England Patriots. Opening line for the Patriots was in the double digits. With a 17-14 upset, the Giants won the XLII Super Bowl in what would be the third biggest betting line upset in a Super Bowl.
But that team was long gone. Or at least it was nowhere to be seen this past season. Sure, they had a brilliant 5-0 start until they faced the powerful New Orleans Saints on their route to the Saints first ever Vince Lombardi Trophy. Things kept going south from there on. They lost the following 4 games and only made a slight comeback to close the season with an 8-8 record.
There were serious problems on the defensive end, and despite having the talents of Eli Manning orchestrating the aerial attacks; the Giants were unable to bring on their A-game. The Giants defensive was ranked 13th in the league, allowing 324.9 yards per game. The two last losses of the season where the trigger for change. The Giants defensive line allowed 85 points in their last two defeats and that was the goodbye notice for first year defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan.
New Stadium, New Hopes
Perry Fewell left his post as the Buffalo Bills interim coach and made it to the Giants as their new defensive coordinator. So things could change, and should change, for this 2010 NFL season. First, they are going to be playing in a new field. This is the team’s first season in their new Meadowlands Stadium that the team builds jointly with the New Jersey Jets for 1.6 billion dollars. It is one of the nicer stadiums in the League, and it has already been announced that the stadium will host the XLVIII Super Bowl in February 2014.
Training camp should get interesting, especially on the offensive lineup. It is not as solid as it used to be. They are missing playmakers, guys who can find spaces and go for it. The Giants were not great either on their passing game or their running game. William Beatty, David Diehl, are going to battle for offensive tackle position on the flanks, during this training camp. They want to be the starters. We have to wait and see what Kareem McKenzie knee status is. He is a potent player, capable of bringing stamina and speed to the Giants offensive lines. They have a good rooster. Tom Coughlin is going to have the human resource to bring back his team to the top spots of the league. Let’s see what happens. As of press time, the Giants are expected to hit the 8½ regular season mark. The over is set at a ML+130. In the odds to win the XLV Super Bowl they hit the +2500 mark.
