David Reutimann, the experienced 40-year-old pilot, won the LifeLock.com 400 last weekend, to close up the 19th event of the current Nascar Sprint Cup.
Reutiman took control of the Chicagoland Speedway and was able to take home his second Sprint Cup win of his career. His first win at Nascar’s elite racing division came back in 2009 when Reutimann won the Coca Cola 600 in Charlotte.
Contrary to what we experienced in the previous Sprint Cup race, the LifeLock.com 400 was a clean and well-driven race, with very few accidents or incidents of any sort. This was quite pleasant as most drivers completed the 267 laps without risking their lives. Overall, 10 different racers took a go at the front end of the pack, and only 4 yellow flags were waved during the whole race.
Reutimann was seventh in the starting grid. It was Jamie McMurray who went on to complete the fastest lap on the training laps to win the poll position.
Reutimann is still pending to sign a new contract with the Micheal Waltrip Racing team. He has had a good season for the team. He has been quite constant and he has managed to drive his Toyota Camry #00 with superb skill. He kept his focus during the shole race, avoiding any situation that might endanger his chances to win the race. Once again he proved to be a very professional and serious racer.
Reutimann managed to stay close to the leading cars for most of the race. He was aware that his car was in optimal conditions and that all he had to do was to hold on and wait for the other racers to make a slight mistake and move on forward.
Jimmie Johnson, the Sprint Cup defending Champion, stayed in front of the pack for the first 94 laps. Despite having the fastest car on the course, he made a mistake when driving in to pits and he lost his first spot. Jamie McMurray succeeded him on the front- He managed to lead the pack for the next 40 laps.
When the race was in its 136th lap, Johnson had an incident and lost control of his vehicle. When he was able to get back on track he was now 24th. He had very little chances of making it all the way to the front. To make things worse, 60 laps later, Johnson blew out on of his tires and had to work his way to yet another pit stop. The defending champion finished 25th in this race.
And that’s when Reutimann moved on to the front. He was able to block Carl Edwards, but not even the tenacious and risky driver was able to surpass him. He managed all the attacks until the end. Reutimann was the first driver to see the waving finish flat. Edwards came in second. Jeff Gordon completed the podium.
This was a great race for all the underdogs. With defending champion Johnson out of the way, it was an all in sprint for the finish line. Kevin Harvick, the racer the leads the drivers ranking was not that great either. Now the Sprint Cup moves on to Indianapolis for their next race on July 25th.
