Giant Schnauzers - Intelligent, Active and Protective

Whether you are looking to purchase the Giant Schnauzer for yourself or as a gift for someone else, it is important to know everything that you possibly can about this breed. This is a bold and protective dog, good with children in its own family but often to boisterous with small children.

This dog breed is intelligent and is used as a police dog in Germany. Although they excel at this job, they have not been accepted in this role outside of Germany.

This large and powerful breed has bushy eyebrows, whiskers, and a beard. Even though it has a harsh and dense coat, the undercoat is considerably soft. When the coat is left correctly, the length of it is the same height as the dog. This ends up giving the breed a square look to it.

The color of the coat is generally solid black or a salt and pepper. The tail is docked most often and in some cases, cropping of the ears may be found. Dew claws should always be removed on the hind legs and possibly on the front legs as well.

The eyes are an oval shape and a nice shade of dark brown. With all of the Giant Schnauzer's characteristics, it is hard to imagine anyone not falling in love with this animal.

Since these dogs need room to run, apartment living is not the best situation for them. The Giant Schnauzers should be taken on walks daily in order for them to have a release for all of their extra energy.

Besides nice and gentle walks, this breed loves to have a little fun with running. If you are not able to keep up on your own two feet then consider riding your bike along side of your Giant Schnauzer. He or she will have no problem keeping up.

although there are many people who do not give as much exercise attention to the pet, it is important that this is done. This is to keep the dog happy and healthy, both physically and emotionally.

If you are not able or willing to commit to this type of daily activity then it is probably best if you find another dog breed. There are breeds out there who like to relax more than run so that may be best for those people who do not like activity.

Most of the coat is easy enough to look after but the undercoat has proven to be a problem for some people. This is because the undercoat is dense and can become matted with ease.

In order to prevent this from becoming an issue, make sure that you are brushing the Giant Schnauzer with a short wire brush at least once a week. Along with the weekly brushing, you will want to make sure that your pet is clipped at least four times each year. Make sure that the cut is an even length in order to achieve the right look.

It is important to watch to make sure that the dog is cleaned after their meals. This is because their whiskers can often times find themselves covered with food crumbs.

With all of this work it is nice to know that there are some great points to this breed's grooming requirements. Luckily, there are not going to be a lot of odors to cover up as this dog barely releases any. There is also little shedding that will take place so you will not have to worry about vacuuming hair all day long.

The Giant Schnauzer makes a great pet for someone who is active and who wants a dog to share their adventures. These dogs are made for the active life.
