Mark Webber, the Australian racer from Red Bull Racing, was the most dominant driver in the Hungary Grand Prix and won his 4th race in the current Formula One Championship season.
Webber was second from the starting grid, followed closely by Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel was the fastest during the qualifying laps and had the pole position.
Alonso managed to speed ahead of Webber from the start, sending Webber to the third place. The Spaniard managed to lead the way during the following 15 laps. Vettel, managed to stick around and keep hold of his first place.
In the sixteenth lap, the safety car had to make an entrance after Vitantonio Liuzzi, from Force India Racing, had a severe crash and parts of his race car were left all over the runway.
All of the drivers took advantage of this situation and made a pits stop to change tires. Webber and Rubens Barrichello were the only drivers who decided to stay with their starting set of wheels.
Webber kept the pressure and was able to get great results from his tires. Without too much hassle he was able to take the lead and sustain it. Vettel was forced by the racing authorities to make a pass through the pit stop. He was sanction with this penalty because he stayed behind the pace car once the race restarted. Webber had it fairly easy since then.
On the 20th lap Webber was called in from the boxes to make a pit stop and change his tires. Still, the driver from Red Bull took his chances and managed to keep the tires until the 43rd lap. Lewis Hamilton had an issue with the drive train and had to quit the race on the 20th lap.
By the time Webber made his first step he had been able to create such a gap that he could make the pit stop without having to sacrifice his first position on the racetrack. Not even after the stop were the other racers able to catch up with him.
Fernando Alonso was following closely behind Webber. The Spaniard from the Renault team was able to keep Vettel off his tail for most of the race. Vettel was really pushing with all his might to get ahead of Alonso and secure the second spot on the podium.
Most of the excitement came from this duel for second place. The three first drivers were very ahead of the rest of the field. Webber was flawless on his driving. The car behaved exactly as it was expected and was able to keep up with the challenging circuit.
Just to prove his dominance on the field, Webber was able to place a couple consecutive fastest laps on the circuit to really open up the gap with Alonso. He was able to pull an 18-second difference by the time Alonso finished the race. Vettel followed shortly after.
Webber obtained 25 points towards the drivers’ general standing. Considering that Hamilton could not score, Webber became the new driver’s leader with 161 units. Hamilton is now second with 157 points on his behalf.
There are still seven more races in the Formula 1 World Championship. Anything could happen. The drivers will face each other on August 29th in the Grand Prix of Belgium.
