Kitchen is a pretty unsafe place even for an adult who is forced to spend a few hours inside it every day. For a child, his attraction to the kitchen is defined by the things that he sees there. He is fascinated because most of the things there are different from his toys, and even from the things that he sees in other parts of the house. However, most of these kitchen things that attract him have the inherent potential to harm him.

Adults cannot do without any of the special things that kitchens have. Nor is it possible for them to totally ban a child’s entry into the kitchen. However much others may try to engage him with his toys, a child will make his hesitant way into these barred premises and will raise his hands to touch a tin opener, a knife, a lighter, or even harmless things like a plate or a glass. And he will definitely not use it for what it is meant to be used for. He may throw it around, hurt himself or others with it, or spill or splash something else. While there may not be foolproof methods for preventing all this, child safety products will save the day for the adult to a large extent.

Availability of Child Safety Products

Markets are chock-a-block with products that can protect the child from the inherent threats of a kitchen or a bathroom. The more dangerous a place is, the better its protection mechanisms should be. And for a child, a threat is not only from things that are obviously risky like a hot kettle or knife. Even things that are cherished things for adults can be dangerous for children.

A wine glass, or a piece of beautiful china, will break into smithereens in no time if the child gets access to it. These have to be kept locked up, and plates and glasses used daily should preferably be of unbreakable material till the child overgrows its curiosity stage. Other child safety products that kitchens need are baby proof locks for cabinets and drawers. Things like knives, forks, matches, and scissors should be kept locked within them.

Everything should be kept locked

While sharp things like knives and can openers should remain inside drawers that have child safety locks, there are also other items that can afford to have a lock. An oven inside which something is cooking should remain locked. A dish washer can also do with a lock even when it is not working. Dish washers are often at heights that a child can reach, and he may try to crawl into it when it is not working.

Stove knob covers and burner guards are the other child safety products that are needed in a kitchen. All these will lighten the burden of the adult who is in charge of the child, but will definitely not free him or her from the duty of keeping a watchful eye on it. Inside a kitchen, the child should always remain within the circle of vision of the adult, far away from the stove and oven and related paraphernalia.
