Anti Doping Controls at the Euro 2008
The second biggest football event commonly known as the UEFA European Football Championship; which this year will be hosted by the countries of Switzerland and Austria will add a new special measurement. All 16 different football associations will allow for their players to take blood and urine tests in order to support the anti-doping controls which are currently conducted in most sports.
The idea was taken into consideration and finally implemented due to the several doping scandals which have shadowed the world of sports in general. The testing UEFA is suggesting will enable to detect any type of banned substances such as: blood-boosting drug EPO, growth hormone or even any kind of unusual blood transfusion. The samples of these tests will be taken to the UEFA’s laboratories in Lausanne and the results will be ready within 48 hours.
Despite the fact; UEFA president Platini does not believe football faces this problem but he is totally in favour of preventing any future cases. Also, it is a good lesson for all top ranking football players to make sure they stay away from any wrong doing while being active with their club or at an international competition. As he stated there could be one or two isolated situations; therefore; it is better to be safe and let the tests be ran.
The UEFA Football Association has being supported by all the football clubs which signed an anti-doping agreement to ensure their commitment. Among the countries participating are: Portugal, World Cup Champions Italy, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Romania, Netherlands, Turkey, Poland, and Spain just to mention some.
The tests will be ran unexpectedly at the different locations and teams’ base camps in both hosting countries in the cities of Berne, Basel, Zurich, Geneva, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt; either at the beginning stages of the tournament or at the start of any match.
"We have good controls. I think there are better controls in football than in other sports," he said, referring to Uefa's new anti-doping rules. "We want to show the whole world are taking the fight against doping seriously. This is why we are signing this charter" mentioned UEFA president Platini.
It is understood by everyone that each team plus ten of its players will be tested at least once. Basically, two players of each team will be selected at any of the 31 games.
Lately; the sport of football is tying its regulations which could only bring positive benefits for the members involved; for example there is the possible suspension of Spain from the upcoming European championship due a recent interference in the election process which is ruled by the UEFA itself. This has been a real problem as it is clear the football organization exists to oversee everything is done correctly and to avoid any misleading ideas of self power.
